Robert Anton Wilson is reported to have once said, "Under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. We have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. We have never seen a totally sane human being."
The thief found that the general who'd plagued the years where he became a better man was someone closer to him than he'd imagined. The thief's hands itched to take the general's life, but the storyteller's heart longed to see the cycle of violence broken. He could not stop the general, so he used his preferred weapon: a pen to parchment. Not as good as a knife to an artery, but the consequences tend to be far less dire.
Of course, as the assassin observed before she was lost: The wonderful thing about violence is that it's always available.
